There’s something about November that invites reflection. The light fades a little earlier, the air grows sharper, and we’re encouraged to pause.

At the Women’s Leadership Connection, it’s a time to honor those who paved the way. I’m thankful for the original WLC “godmothers” whose vision, creativity, and caring built the strong foundation beneath our feet.

Patsy Smullin, Lyn Hennion, and Sue Kupillas didn’t wait for perfect conditions or permission to lead. They gathered, listened, and shared a belief that leadership could look different. Together, they created a space where women could connect and lift each other toward opportunity. What began as a simple act of collaboration became a movement rooted in courage, inclusion, and shared purpose.

Now, more than ever, I’m grateful that true leadership is not a solo journey. The legacy left behind by our godmothers and founding members reminds us that none of us succeeds alone. Every door I walk through today was first opened by someone who dared to believe in something bigger. Their work calls us to continue what they started.

As a collective act—made stronger by the diversity of ideas and experiences we bring together—it reminds me to show up for my community. When I lean into gratitude, I come away wiser, more compassionate, and better equipped to serve.

After all, gratitude is more than a feeling; it’s an action. It shows up in the way we mentor others, share opportunities, and celebrate each other’s successes. It lives in the moments when we listen, encourage, and make space for new leaders to emerge.

This November, let’s all lead with gratitude. Celebrate the women who came before us. Cheer on the colleagues who walk beside us. Prepare for the next generation finding their voices.

Together, we can keep building a future grounded in courage and community. Let’s each take one intentional step this month to lift another woman—through mentorship, encouragement, or connection—so that the spirit of our founders continues to grow through all of us.
